Why buy industrial machines through a multi-brand dealer
What a multi-brand machine dealer does for a Canadian shop: brand comparison and one contact for freight, customs, installation, training and service.

Buying a fiber laser, a press brake or a paper cup machine is rarely only a machine decision. The price on the quote is one number. The real cost also includes getting the machine to your door, getting it approved and wired, getting your people productive on it, and getting parts when something wears out two years later. This article explains what a multi-brand dealer does, where it helps, where it does not, and what to ask any seller, including us.
What a multi-brand dealer is
Titan does not build machines. We supply machines from many manufacturers across metalworking, woodworking and packaging, and we quote them together with delivery, installation and operator training in Canada. After go-live we handle parts and service requests. A single-brand dealer or a factory sales office sells one product line. That is not a bad thing, because they know that line well. But their answer to "which machine should I buy?" will always be one of theirs.
Independent comparison across brands
Most machine categories have several credible manufacturers at different price and support levels. Two 6 kW fiber lasers with the same bed size can differ in cutting head, controller, nesting software, automation options, chiller, and what the price actually includes. Two press brakes with the same tonnage can differ in backgauge axes, crowning and controller. Two paper cup machines with the same speed can differ in size range, mould change time and sealing method.
A multi-brand dealer can lay those differences side by side against your parts, your materials and your volume. The useful comparison is not a spec sheet contest. It comes down to questions like these:
- Will this machine cut, bend or form my typical parts at the quality I need, not just the headline maximum?
- What does the price include: tooling, software licences, chiller, compressor, loading table, spare consumables?
- Which controller does it use, and can my operators learn it?
- Which wear parts will I need in the first two years, and where do they ship from?
A fair caveat: a dealer earns money on what it sells, so ask how a recommendation was reached. A good one will show you why a smaller or cheaper machine fits, and will tell you when the machine you have in mind is not the right one.
One Canadian contact for the steps that go wrong
Machines bought directly from an overseas factory can be good value. The problems usually show up after the purchase order, in the steps nobody owned.
Freight and customs
Every commercial import into Canada needs an importer with a business number and an import/export program account, a correct 10-digit tariff classification, and payment of GST plus any duty that applies to that classification and country of origin. A licensed customs broker can do the filing, but the importer stays responsible for the declaration. Heavy machines also need crating that survives an ocean crossing, rigging, and a plan for the last few metres into your building. We quote freight, installation and training together so each of those steps has an owner.
Electrical approval
This one catches people. In Canada, electrical equipment has to be approved before it is connected: either certified by an accredited certification body (CSA, cUL and others), or field evaluated by an inspection body under CSA SPE-1000. Provincial authorities enforce this, and Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority is known for enforcing it closely. A machine built for another market may also arrive wired for 380 or 400 V, while many Canadian plants run 600 V three-phase, so a transformer or rewiring may be needed. Find this out before the machine ships, not after it is on your floor.
Installation, safety review and training
Levelling, anchoring, connecting power, air, gas and extraction, and running the first parts all take planning. Some provinces add their own steps. In Ontario, for example, certain safeguarding arrangements, such as light curtains or interlocked guards used as the protective element, trigger a pre-start health and safety review by a professional engineer under Regulation 851. Training should happen on your parts, with your operators, not as a demo on sample coupons.
Parts and service after go-live
Nozzles, lenses, protective windows, punches and dies, glue pots, heating elements, belts and sensors all wear. Before you buy, know who you call, which parts are worth keeping on your shelf, and how remote diagnosis works if the machine supports it.
When buying direct can make sense
If you already run several machines of the same brand, have in-house electrical and maintenance staff, and have an existing relationship with the manufacturer, going direct may be reasonable. The trade-off is that you carry the coordination risk yourself. A dealer is worth it when that coordination would otherwise land on you.
Questions to ask any seller
- Which manufacturer builds this machine, and which model exactly? Can I see the factory's own specification sheet?
- Is the machine certified for Canada, or will it need a field evaluation? Who arranges it and who pays for it?
- What supply voltage is it built for, and what does it need from my plant: power, air, gas, extraction, floor loading?
- What exactly is included in the price, and what is quoted separately?
- Who handles freight, customs, rigging and installation, and what are the delivery terms?
- What training is included, where, for how many people and for how many days?
- Which spare parts should I stock at start-up, and where are replacements shipped from?
- What support is included after go-live, for how long, and who comes on site if needed?
- Can I see this model running, or talk to a shop that uses it?
Checklist before you request quotes
- List the parts, materials and thicknesses you run most, with rough annual volumes.
- Measure the space and door openings, check the floor, and note your supply voltage and available amps.
- Decide who in your shop will be trained and who owns maintenance.
- Send the questions above to two or three sellers in writing so the answers can be compared.
